The Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT 1) Rectifier Substation (RSS) Rehabilitation Project upgrades the nine existing substations of the train line. The improved electrical substation power distribution and monitoring system significantly enhances the reliability and efficiency of one of the busiest mass railway transit systems in Metro Manila.
Awarded by the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) to the First Balfour-MRAIL joint venture in October 2018, the design and build project replaced major equipment in the RSS including 34.5 kV electrical switchgears, 35 kilometers of power cables, silicon rectifier units, and a 2150kVA transformer. It also upgraded its Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) monitoring system which enables LRMC to remotely monitor and control the substation equipment. To protect all the new equipment, new fire detection and suppression systems were also installed.
Since the LRT 1 became operational in the 1980s, it has seen passenger journeys increase to half a million a day in just 3 decades. The project, spanning from Balintawak Station to the LRMC Depot in Pasay, is a major component towards enhanced passenger safety.
