Editor’s note: Since 2020, eWalkthrough has been celebrating National Women’s Month by sharing the inspiring stories of the women of First Balfour through our #WomenWednesdays series. This year, we continue the tradition with a four-part feature highlighting their leadership, resilience, and impact.
For the third installment in our series, we delve into the journey of Estimating Department Head Arlene M. Diaz as she shares the valuable lessons and insights that led her to this role. Hired in 2011 as a project quantity surveyor, she rose from the ranks and was later on appointed as the lead of a team essential to our winning strategy.
Tell us more about your role. I lead First Balfour’s Estimating Department, a dynamic team composed of 20 members. We play a pivotal role in securing projects by managing all bid submissions—whether for [Lopez] group or non-group entities, as well as government and private sector opportunities. Our work requires expertise in both the technical and commercial aspects of our core construction and engineering business.
What’s a typical work day like for you?
My day starts early—really early. I’m up by 4:00 AM and out the door before 5:00 AM, making my way from higher Caloocan to Fairview, a journey of about 30 minutes. Once I arrive at work, I begin my day by reviewing my schedule, checking emails, and responding to messages. I also dedicate 20 to 30 minutes to team huddles, ensuring that my sector leads have the support they need. From there, my day is packed with meetings and completing deliverables. By the end of a workday, I prepare for another 2.5 to 3-hour commute back home. It’s a demanding routine, but I’m already used to it after nearly 13 years. In fairness na-miss ko siya during the pandemic lockdown! (In fairness, I missed doing this during the lockdown!).
What excites and motivates you about work? I’d like to think of myself as one of the veteran estimators in the company. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside an incredible team, handling and securing complex projects—many of which were firsts for the company. Every project has been a learning experience, pushing me and my team to continuously grow and adapt.
Now, as the department’s new leader—and even during my time as a team leader—I find great fulfillment in sharing my knowledge and mentoring younger team members. Seeing them succeed and grow into their roles is something I take immense pride in. In many ways, I feel like I’ve been part of their journey. Sobrang nakakaproud.

What challenges (personal or professional) have you overcome that made you stronger as a professional?
I’m naturally introverted, so starting conversations or leading discussions has never been my strong suit. When management entrusted me with this role, overcoming this challenge became my top priority. While being an extrovert is not required for the role, I do need to learn how to connect with others and initiate conversations. I can confidently say that I’m improving and making progress on this front.
Additionally, working in a male-dominated organization comes with its own set of challenges—one of which is asserting ideas that I know can make a difference, especially in high-stakes bid discussions. There have been many instances, particularly in collaboration meetings with partners, where I’ve been the only woman in the room. In those moments, I make it a point to speak up, sharing both technical and commercial insights. It’s important to be heard, not just for the sake of it, but because I know I have something valuable to contribute. And honestly, it feels great when my ideas are recognized and considered.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned as a woman in your career? I’ve learned that building a strong and supportive network—comprising colleagues, mentors, and leaders, both men and women—is essential for personal and professional growth. Confidence, resilience, and collaboration have been key to overcoming challenges and making meaningful contributions to the organization.
I started my career at First Balfour as a young Quantity Surveyor, then progressed to Junior Estimator, and later became an Estimating Team Lead. Throughout this journey, the company’s commitment to empowering and developing its people has played a significant role in my growth. That unwavering support and trust have given me the confidence to step into my current role as Estimating Department Head, and I’m deeply grateful for this journey.
What vision do you have for women at First Balfour? My vision for women in this organization is to create an inclusive and supportive environment where women are empowered to thrive at every level; to have more position in the organization. I believe in providing equal opportunities for career growth, ensuring that women have access to leadership roles and resources to succeed. I also envision fostering a culture of mentorship, collaboration, and recognition of the unique perspectives’ women bring, ensuring that their contributions are valued and recognized.
