Growth in any organization is driven by the continuous development of its people. In an industry where leadership and efficiency are essential, having the right knowledge and skills can make a significant difference in the way construction projects are delivered.
At First Balfour, employees have the opportunity to expand their expertise through structured learning programs. Recently, three team members completed a project management course designed to enhance their ability to handle complex projects. Their experiences highlight how training initiatives contribute not only to individual career growth but also to the overall success of the teams they lead.
Leaders as learners
Each of the three project managers took away something different from their training programs, but they all agreed on one thing—their experience changed the way they approach project management.
Construction Manager Renz Javier and Project Manager JP Tamayo completed the Enhanced Construction Managers’ Training and Certification Program from the Multi-Disciplinary Institute of Technology, Inc., a pioneer in the provision of training programs in the architecture, engineering, and construction sector. The program trains project managers to master project control, decision making, resource management, and the latest Building Information Modeling (BIM) implementation strategies including the ISO 19650 standards.
Renz shares, “Programs and certifications like this provide an opportunity to connect with fellow professionals in construction project management. You will gain valuable insights, learn from others’ construction experiences, and assess both your theoretical knowledge and practical skills.” He believes advanced courses like these can help project managers prepare for higher responsibilities.

The program had multiple courses, but for Renz and JP, the BIM course was their most valuable learning. “For me, the most difficult but also the most exciting part of the training is the application of BIM especially in today’s construction era. I believe that my advantage, which led me to pass the certification on the first try, is the years of experience I gained with First Balfour projects as well as previous learnings from similar management trainings I took at the UP National Engineering Center and AIM,” said JP.

Meanwhile, Anton Opelario, who manages our projects in Negros Oriental, completed the Construction Program Management Masterclass from the Philippine Constructors Association, Inc. (PCA)—an organization widely known in the local engineering and construction industry. The eight-day program focused on helping professionals adapt to the industry’s ever-changing demands, with only 40 slots available for enrollment.
“The training was life changing. The lecturers were all executives and you hear stories of how they grew their company,” said Anton. “All things come from humble beginnings. Many of the big companies came from a small start. It’s good inspiration and motivation, and a refresher that I’m in the right direction with the things I’m doing” stated Anton.
“Construction management is an art, a never-ending progress.” Anton further added.

Culture of Learning and Growth
First Balfour’s culture is built on continuous learning, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence. Employees are encouraged to seek opportunities for growth, not just for their own development but towards realizing our mission of forging collaborative pathways for a decarbonized and regenerative future.
“First Balfour is a growing organization aiming to take on larger, more complex projects. Likewise, we want our project managers to grow alongside us and be prepared to manage these challenges,” said First Balfour HR Head for Talent Management and Organizational Development Bibi Aquino.
The programs also align with the company’s focus on strengthening teamwork and innovation. By equipping employees with structured project management knowledge, they are better prepared to lead initiatives, drive efficiency, and navigate the complexities of large-scale projects with confidence.
Professional development often happens in ways that are not immediately visible but have a lasting impact. Through continuous investment in learning, teams are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to contribute to long-term success.
“We continuously explore ways for everyone to grow. By offering learning and development opportunities, we not only invest in our people but also help shape their future, wherever their path may lead.” added HR Manager for Learning & Development Megan Zarzadiaz.
