It was in 2003 when First Balfour held its first blood donation drive. This year, its foremost Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative celebrates its 10th anniversary with the theme “Be Someone’s Superhero: Save Lives By Donating Blood.”
Organized in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), this year’s blood drive held last March 2 in the Head Office Training Room witnessed a good turnout. Seventy qualified donors – a significant increase from last year’s fifty – were able to donate 450cc of blood bags each. Head Office and Plant Department employees, as well as those from ongoing First Balfour projects such as the ADB Cafeteria, Prima Residences in Quezon Avenue, FPIC West Tower, New 111ML San Juan Reservoir, Nestle Project Frontier, and Silangan Water System participated in the event.
On May 10, Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) Supervisor Anchel Cruz led a blood donation drive in the site of an ongoing project for the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) in Sorsogon. Held in cooperation with the City Health Office, the drive reached 43 successful donors from First Balfour’s EDC projects in the region and also from the company’s subcontractors.
Cruz, who has been spearheading the event since 2003, attested that employees are more aware now of the importance of blood donation. Procurement Department Technical Assistant and first-time donor Romeo Carlo “Chuck” Casela was among those strongly encouraged to take the chance and be part of the activity. “Though at first I was anxious at the sight of needles, I know what I was supposed to do will not only help those in need but could also make me healthier,” he quipped. Chuck said he felt genuine happiness and fulfillment “not just because I know I saved a life, but also because I conquered fear and made an accomplishment for myself.”
Last year, First Balfour was among the recipients of PRC’s Certificate of Appreciation in a recognition ceremony held at the Palacio de Maynila. Among the other recipients from the Lopez Group of Companies were Bayan Telecommunications (Certificate of Appreciation) and First Sumiden Circuits, Inc. (Blood Services Outstanding Award).
