Investors in People Bronze
First Balfour takes investment in people to a higher level as it achieved the Investors in People (IiP) Bronze Certification during an awarding ceremony held last July 31 at the Hotel Intercontinental in Makati City. Awarded with the IiP standard certification in April 2010, the company remains to be the first and only IiP Bronze-certified engineering and construction company in the Philippines.
Developed in Europe during the 1990s, IiP has become an international benchmark for companies which are believed to have strong management skills and empowered human resources. First Balfour now joins the roster of five other IiP Bronze-certified companies in the Philippines: South Cotabato Integrated Port Services, Inc., Misamis Oriental-1 Rural Electric Service Coop, Inc., British Council, and fellow Lopez Group companies Asian Eye Institute and First Philippine Industrial Park. Among all the IiP bronze-certified companies, First Balfour is the largest in terms of manpower and geographical spread of operations.
Bound for Bronze: The Journey
Eighty employees across various functions and positions were randomly selected from the list of 430 Core Business Employees (CBEs) for the assessment held last June 13 and 14, with participating employees from the company’s ongoing projects in Leyte, Bataan, and Davao interviewed via Skype. Since March of this year, the IiP Implementation Team, composed of Human Resources personnel and representatives from selected departments and divisions, has been ardently conducting orientation and mock audit sessions to better prepare the employees come the actual audit schedule. “The willingness of the team to go the extra mile despite their workload, that’s the commendable part,” shares Human Resources and Administration Group Vice President Carlos C. Salonga (CCS) on this recent achievement.
“The company is successfully pushing forward with its massive growth plans and with this, we are taking on board a record number of new co-employees. This IiP Bronze Certification is our affirmation that despite the much bigger workforce, we are working as a cohesive, tight-knit, and powerful team,” shares First Balfour President and COO Anthony L. Fernandez.
The bigger challenge is sustaining and reinforcing the company’s people management initiatives and building the high performance culture with the right people as the company transforms itself into an industry giant. With this recent milestone, the company envisions an even brighter future for FB employees who share First Balfour’s commitment to nation-building and uplifting the quality of life of the Filipino.
